Total has selected the Saft Flex’ion battery solution to provide backup power for the corporate and trading data center at its new country headquarters in the high-rise Frasers Tower in Singapore.
With space at a premium in the prestigious tower building, the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery offers the major advantages of being compact and lightweight, enabling Total to maximize the space available for business.
Compared with the traditional choice of lead-acid backup batteries, Li-ion operates reliably at high temperatures. As a result, operators can reduce cooling and improve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), an important measure of the energy efficiency of data centers.
Saft collaborated with technology partner Socomec to provide the turnkey solution featuring the Flex’ion battery systems as part of the Modulys Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system. Both components are modular, which means the UPS can be scaled to meet additional power and energy requirements over time.
Saft supplied two Flex’ion 60 kVA and 120 kVA Li-ion battery systems. Both are designed to provide 10 minutes of backup time to maintain power for trading activities until the building’s backup generator powers up.
This project positions Saft as a reputable Li-ion battery provider for the world’s critical oil and gas trading platforms now and in the coming years. Another major advantage is Flex’ion’s front face Human Machine Interface (HMI) that displays key battery data. Flex’ion battery advanced communication with the UPS differentiates from standard battery technology. It can be easily connected to a Building Management Systems (BMS) or supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Overall, the solution minimizes the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for data center owners.
