Key takeaways from IOTSWC22 Barcelona

Digitalization and disruptive technologies will transform the industrial ecosystem to improve business outcomes in uncertain times

After two years of disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the IoT Solutions World Congress, the leading international IoT event, returned in May for its sixth edition, bringing together industry leaders and innovators in Barcelona. Key on the agenda was the role that digitalization and disruptive technologies will play to accelerate the energy transition and integrate sustainability to reshape the global economy.

Combining disruptive technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented and Virtual Reality, 5G Connectivity and Quantum Computing can improve business outcomes by reimagining manufacturing and supply chains to reduce waste, save energy and lower carbon emissions. Of course, powering these technologies is at the heart of the IoT ecosystem, which is why our team of experts from Saft Connected Energy were present, to welcome and inform visitors from across the IoT universe.

In 2022, the IoT market is expected to grow 18% to 14.4 billion active connections, and further accelerate to reach an estimated 27 billion connected devices by 2025. The Covid-19 pandemic created unprecedented disruption around the world and accelerated the adoption of IoT technologies across every market vertical. With billions of connected sensors deployed on assets and networks around the world, companies are collecting and processing data at a higher frequency and velocity. This is driving strong growth in low power wide area networks (LPWAN), to improve the power consumption of user devices, with a shift away from legacy 2G/3G networks towards 4G/5G networks. Narrow band, NB-IoT adoption is seeing particularly strong growth in the areas of water and gas metering.

According to Tom Willis, Marketing Director of Saft Connected Energy Division, “The IoT-driven technological revolution is transforming data into business-critical information, creating operational efficiencies and driving long term growth across most, if not all, industries. As a leading provider of battery power solutions for IoT, we help our customers to assess the power demands of their devices, to transmit data effectively and efficiently within the complex and rapidly evolving IoT ecosystem of competing networks. From the early design stage, through prototyping and testing, and then in-field installation and monitoring, we ensure their devices have the power they need throughout the lifetime of their connectivity solutions.”

With 330 exhibiting companies and more than 12,000 visitors, over 3 days, the #IOTSWC22 was a great success. We had the pleasure of meeting and engaging with customers from all sectors of the IoT ecosystem. Over the coming weeks we will be highlighting some of these customer use cases on our Energizing IoT blog, so stay tuned!
