Ancillary Services

Increasing power demands, especially during peak periods, power flow fluctuations and other disturbances are stressing transmission and distribution grids. Add on a growing penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources, and instability has never been more challenging. Synchronized reserves with no fuel consumption, frequency and area regulation and dynamic voltage support are critical ancillary services necessary to stabilize grids under such conditions.

Saft’s high power Li-ion modules are the building blocks for multi-MW, kV-level energy storage solutions. Load leveling, peak shaving and other types of dynamic and rapid support are easily provided once these storage systems are in place allowing electricity utilities to successfully introduce intermittent renewable resources. Large Renewables’ Integration (PV & Wind Farm)

These off-grid energy storage systems are often in remote conditions forced to face harsh weather conditions but their stable performance benefit the developing world by addressing its electrification needs. Off-grid PV systems power remote radio and telecom systems, as well as maritime signaling and DC power installations in the oil and gas industry.

In hybrid power applications, battery energy storage can support a mixed combination of off-grid generation comprising various combinations of wind turbines, PV arrays, diesel-generators and fuel cells.

Smart Distribution Grids

When a substation is operating close to its peak capacity, a new substation and distribution feeder reconfiguration might be considered, especially if renewables are in the mix. However, major capital investments of this kind can be differed, or even eliminated altogether, by installing robust and reliable Saft energy storage systems throughout a network’s strategic points. Our storage systems relieve network capacity constraints and increase their renewable hosting capabilities. A de-stressed grid reduces feeder congestion during demand peaks, provides voltage support and enables black start and islanding.
