Specialty Battery Group
With its Specialty Battery Group (SBG), Saft is the world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance primary lithium and rechargeable Li-ion batteries for the electronics, defence and space industries. These advanced-technology batteries are required to be compact, lightweight, highly reliable and long-lasting. SBG also supplies rechargeable and non rechargeable silver-based batteries for conventional defence applications (missiles and torpedoes).
Civil lithium
Lithium batteries are used in industry. With their reliability, long life, reduced weight and high performance, these batteries are key components in utility meters, automated meter readers, electronic and medical equipment, alarms and automated road toll systems. Saft is the world’s N°1 supplier of primary lithium technologies for industry. The civil lithium market offers good growth potential in coming years, with the regular emergence of new applications, such as transport tracking systems, medical devices and oil and gas applications.
Military lithium
Saft is the world’s top supplier of primary lithium batteries for defence applications, providing solutions that power a range of equipment including radios and night-vision goggles as well as battlefield systems such as missile launchers and thermal imaging cameras. SBG’s main clients include the U.S., French, U.K., Israeli, German, Australian and Indian armed forces.
Traditional defence
Saft designs and manufactures silver-based batteries for torpedo propulsion and missile guidance systems. SBG’s main clients in this sector are military prime contractors with which Saft has long-term contracts. Each battery is designed for a specific application, but all are required to be robust, shock-resistant and have a long shelf-life.
Satellites
Saft is the leading manufacturer of batteries for commercial satellites used by the telecom and scientific sectors and n°2 in the Defence sector. Satellite batteries must be able to withstand extreme conditions and must continue to perform reliably for up to 15 years once the satellite has been launched into orbit. In this market, Saft has pioneered solutions based on Li-ion technology, combining lighter weight with better thermal management, but remains the only manufacturer with the complete range of battery technologies.
New Defence Systems
New Defence Systems are a very promising market for Saft. Thanks to its top-flight R&D programmes and its leadership in Li-ion technology, the Group has been selected to take part in a number of major projects. New Defence Systems (programmes mainly implemented by American defence contractors and funded by the U.S. government) include hybrid military vehicles and minisubmarines, which require reliable, lightweight, high-energy and high-power sources.
