Torpedoes

Batteries are key to torpedo propulsion and control, whether launched above or below water.

Around 30 of the world’s navies rely on Saft for reliable torpedo battery technology. This includes batteries for lightweight (LWT) and heavyweight (HWT) torpedoes, in both combat roles and training programmes. We offer multi-technology primary and rechargeable battery solutions to suit the specific torpedo application.

Combat and training torpedo batteries

Saft’s range of primary torpedo batteries includes:

Ag-Zn batteries are used in HWT torpedoes; AgCl-Mg batteries are used in LWT weapons; while AgO-AI is used only for combat torpedoes where their extra power and energy is demanded.

Li-ion training batteries

Saft rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries represent the most promising technology for training torpedoes. Their reusability offers a more cost-effective approach for sea trials, especially in HWT applications.

Li-ion advantages include:

  • long life (conservatively more than 100 cycles/ 5 years)
  • completely maintenance-free
  • state of charge measurement provides an accurate ‘fuel-gauge’

Saft is developing Li-ion batteries for exercise torpedoes to suit the specific needs of individual navies. These batteries are managed by an electronic control system adapted for each application.
