Industrial and refuse trucks

There is growing interest in hybrid diesel / electric power for delivery and refuse collection trucks that provide clean, quiet and environmentally-friendly operation in towns and cities. Outside the city centre, these vehicles are driven by their diesel engine – which also charges the on-board traction battery. In residential areas, the vehicle switches over to pure electric power.

Hybrid traction – a very demanding application

Hybrid vehicle traction is a very demanding application. The on-board battery must offer:

• fast charging and heavy cycling capability
• high energy density
• small installation footprint and low weight
• robust construction to withstand frequent shock and vibration
• low or zero maintenance

Saft STM and STH Ni-Cd and NHE Ni-MH batteries have been developed to meet these requirements.

Plug and play battery systems

Saft offers a total battery system service. We take responsibility for the whole battery design, development and manufacturing process by acting as a fully integrated, single-source supplier – from initial concept to volume supply. The result is a bespoke power module – tailored to meet the customer’s exact dimensional and performance. It is supplied fully tested and qualified, complete with BMC (Battery Management Control) and BTMS (Battery Thermal Management System) electronics, and ready to ‘plug and play’.
