Emergency back-up & auxiliary power units

Emergency loads usually determine what energy the battery should have. Depending on airworthiness requirements, one or more batteries may have to support essential equipment such as avionics for 30 min to 60 min without the voltage falling below a minimum level, typically 18V. Depending on system architecture, one battery may be dedicated to starting and another one supports essential equipment during starting, with both batteries connected in parallel to support emergency loads.
When alternative emergency power generation is available, such as a ram air turbine (RAT), the battery may only be needed for a few minutes during RAT deployment and during final low speed approach.
